Internships build confidence
I was given the opportunity to work at Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer LLP from brokerage. This was an amazing opportunity to be exposed to a International Law firm for a week, as an aspiring lawyer. I was able to gain a range of tips and information regarding Commercial Law applications and the various schemes which the firm offers. I found this very useful and I was able to gain a better insight into the firm. Besides from the learning aspect, we also engaged in activities. For example, we took part in a mock scenario case involving a company which was accused of committing bribery. Our task was to advise the company’s director, using statues and case law regarding the offence of bribery. We were then given feedback from trainee solicitors on our performance in the task, and this was very helpful and gave us a glimpse into the sort of work we would encounter as future trainee solicitors.
The next task we had to complete was a debate on the motion that ‘Corporate responsibility is all about public relations’. I found this motion particular interesting as it gave as the opportunity to research deeper into reasoning behind corporate responsibility, but also what global firms are doing to increase their diversity. At Freshfields they have set up schemes such as the Stephen Lawrence scholarship and have targets for the number of female partners at their firm.
Overall, I feel through being selected to take part in this internship, I left having more confidence in one day applying for a positon at a commercial law firm.
